What is a Customs broker?

Customs brokers are private individuals, partnerships, associations or corporations licensed, regulated and empowered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to assist importers and exporters in meeting Federal requirements governing imports and exports. Brokers submit necessary information and appropriate payments to CBP on behalf of their clients and charge them a fee for this service.  Brokers must have expertise in the entry procedures, admissibility requirements, classification, valuation, and the rates of duty and applicable taxes and fees for imported merchandise.

Do I need a customs broker?

Yes, you will need a licensed customs broker to clear your shipment with U.S. customs. Your customs broker can arrange to get your shipment transported from the seaport to your door by the inland freight carrier of your choice.  Customs brokers are easily found in the yellow pages and on the Internet.  The U.S. Customs and Border Control website has a nice list of customs brokers available in every state. They have a lot of general information on importing, as well a list of all the USA's ports of entry.  JFJ Sourcing, LLC can refer you to a licensed customs broker in your area if you need.

How does the shipping process work?

All shipments go direct from China to a port of entry in a major city closest to you.  You will then have a customs broker of your choosing clear the shipment and get it shipped to your door.

Do I have to pay import duties on my products when I import them to the USA?

Maybe.  The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol website has a lot of information and resources regarding duties and tariffs.  However, you should visit the website for the United States International Trade Commission for detailed information.  You can download the 2014 Harmonized Tariff Schedule, which includes tariffs for every imported item imaginable.
